This module introduces interdiction techniques that can be used at land controls to identify and intercept the unlawful movement of persons, weapons, explosives, illegal drugs, and the smuggling of illegal goods through our roads and border crossings. It describes various interdiction techniques and why there is a need to use them.
This module covers the process of performing a risk assessment at checkpoints and border crossings. The module raises awareness as to where land controls may be vulnerable to the unlawful movement of persons, weapons, explosives, illegal drugs, and the smuggling of illegal goods. The main objective of this module is to help students learn the principles of risk assessment so that they can use this information to concentrate their law enforcement efforts on where unlawful activity is most likely to be. The module also encourages the student to consider solutions to minimize or solve the risks.
This module covers risk profiling, what it is and how to create a risk profile for use at land controls and border crossings. A risk profile looks at common characteristics in unlawful activities for example people and contraband smuggling and how by identifying these characteristics, an officer can get an idea of what traffickers might look like or what methods they might use.
This module is an introduction to the law enforcement process of selecting high-risk persons goods and vehicles. It describes how by using preliminary observation, questioning, behavioural indicators and other methods an officer can select persons, goods and vehicles that are most likely to be involved in unlawful activity so that they can be subject to further investigation.
The goal of preliminary observation is to quickly observe a person or vehicle in order to identify those persons that are most likely to be involved in unlawful activities for example the smuggling of drugs, contraband, weapons or in terrorist activities.
This module covers how a law enforcement officer can review of documents that are used at typical land controls, including identification cards, passports and vehicle identification in order to identify high-risk persons. The module also describes the various risk indicators that can be found when reviewing documents.
In this module, students learn about behavioral indicators and what signs to look for in order to identify persons who are acting suspiciously at an airport and likely to be involved in unlawful activity. This module is linked closely to the module on initial questioning techniques.
This module covers the basics of how to question persons crossing checkpoints and border crossings, the types of questions to ask and how to listen effectively to a persons answers. Questioning is a very simple and often quick method of identifying persons involved in unlawful activity.
This module covers how to review cargo and its documentation in order to determine which shipments are most likely to be used in the smuggling of contraband for example illegal drugs, wildlife, weapons, and chemicals. Students will learn how to evaluate if a shipment makes economic sense and other information that will help officers select those shipments that are most likely to be involved in unlawful activity.
This module will cover the preliminary observation and inspection of passenger baggage at inland checkpoints and border crossings. The main objective of this module will be to teach you how to first identify and then search baggage that is likely to contain unlawful items for example weapons, drugs, explosives and cash.
This module covers the smuggling of unlawful contraband through body carry at inland checkpoints and border crossings. The objective of this module is to give students a clear understanding of what body carry is and why it presents a problem to law enforcement and how to recognise body-carry smugglers.
This module allows students to review the interdiction techniques for land controls that they have learned and how they can be applied to their job to identify which persons, cargo or vehicles should be given the most attention in order to identify and arrest unlawful persons.
